Guiana is the northernmost state of Brazil, on the Caribbean coast. It is the most populous state in the North region and the state with most descendants of Indian and Dutch origins. The state shares borders with the state of Roraima to the west; Tapajós to the south; Cunani to the east; and the Caribbean Sea to the north. Dirceópolis is the capital and largest city of the state.

In the pre-Brazilian era, the region of Guiana is one of the very few regions to be never colonized or dominated by the Portuguese. It was invaded by the British during the British-Dutch wars. In 1833, Brazilian waged a war against the Netherlands for the Guyanese region, winning in 1836. In the same way as Cunani, the territory was incorporated to Pará as the Intendência da Guiana. After the Brazilian Civil War, the state was emancipated to serve as one of the few controversial black states in Brazil, where the recently-freed Black population was encouraged to settle.

During the 20th century, Guiana's economy evolved thanks to the construction of the Industrial complex of Paramaribo, the third-largest industrial complex, the successful establishment of the city of Fordlândia, and massive immigration to the state. In the first sector, Guiana are the largest exporter of fish whilst being the second-largest exporter of automobiles across the country. The state is a member of the Commonwealth of the Amazon Merchant Region (COREMA).

Guiana has one of the largest multicultural populations in Brazil, the second-largest Black population per state, and a significant Dutch minority, mostly concentrated in Dirceópolis. It has a honorable reputation in advocating for environmental programs in the Amazon. However, it is considered the 23rd most unequal state in Brazil, despite efforts to stimulate the economy and consolidating a welfare state. Guiana has been a longtime stronghold of the Progressive League, until the rise of the Communist and Socialist parties.
