The Republic of Hawaii, also known simply as Hawaii, is a constitutional presidential republic and island nation in the central Pacific Ocean. The Republic of Hawaii was formerly a United States territory, and home to the extensive United States Pacific Fleet, stationed in Pearl Harbor.
The nation of Hawaii was declared on July 19, 1936 by former territorial governor Joesph Poindexter, who became president only a day after the Yellowstone Eruption. Before that Hawaii was a territory for 28 years, one week, and five days, but because of the eruption no longer saw any benefit in remaining a United States territory.
History[]
Pre Eruption[]
Hawaii is believed to have first been settled by Polynesians from Marquesas around the year 300. During the years 1795 to 1810 the Kingdom of Hawaii was established, following the subjugation of the smaller independent chiefdoms of Oʻahu, Maui, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kauaʻi and Niʻihau by the chiefdom of Hawaiʻi (or the "Big Island"), unifying the nation under a single government. On January 17, 1893 the Kingdom was overthrown, in which local businessmen and politicians, composed primarily of American and European residents, overthrew the queen, her cabinet and her marshal, and took over the government.
In 1898 Congress approved a joint resolution of annexation creating the U.S. Territory of Hawaiʻi. Hawaii would remain a territory of the United States up to the Yellowstone Eruption of 1936. Following the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, the United States Navy would establish a base at Pearl Harbor in 1899, which would become home to the extensive United States Pacific Fleet.
Eruption and Formation[]
On July 18, 1936 the Yellowstone Eruption began, destroying much of the American Midwest and throwing dust and debris as far west as the California and the west coast. Hawaii, being situated 2,390 miles from California was not affected by the initial blast, and received word of the disaster soon after.
Seeing that the United States had been destroyed, and that there would no longer be any benefit of remaining a United States territory, on July 19, 1936, one day after the eruption, the nation of Hawaii was declared by former territorial governor Joesph Poindexter, who became the nation's first president.
