The Republic of Hesse (German: Republik Hessen), colloquially known as Hesse (Hessen), is a sovereign state located in Central Europe. The nation is bordered by Westphalia in the north; Bavaria and Prussia in the east; France and Swabia in the south; and Belgium and Luxembourg in the west. Mainz is the capital city, while Frankfurt is the largest city.
Hesse gained independence in the early-1950s as a consequence of the partition of Germany following World War II. The west was originally under French occupation while the east was under American occupation. The newly proclaimed Republic of Hesse moved closer to France during the 1950s and became a member of NATO during this time.
