Hokkaido (Japanese: 北海道 Hokkaidō, literally "Northern Sea Circuit"; Russian: Хоккаидо Khokkaido), officially known as the Republic of Hokkaido (Japanese: 北海道民国 Hokkaidō Mingoku; Russian: Хоккаидинская Республика Khokkaidinskaya Respublika) is one of the 26 constituent republics of the Russian Democratic Federative Republic. It is geographically part of the Japanese archipelago; the Tsugaru Strait separates Hokkaido from Japan. The largest city on Hokkaido is its capital, Sapporo. The Hokkaido Government also administers neighbouring Sakhalin Island.
