Hong Kong (Chinese: 香港 [Standard Mandarin] Xiānggǎng, [Cantonese] Hēunggóng) is a city and a British Overseas Territory on South China, lying to the east of the Pearl River (Zhujiang) estuary. The region is bounded to the north by China's Guangdong province and to the east, south, and west by the South China Sea. Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places in the world, with 7.5 million citizens of diverse ethnicities living in a 1,104-square-kilometer (426-square-mile) area. It is the largest overseas territory of the United Kingdom by population.
Hong Kong is a significant global financial center and one of the world's most developed cities. It is a developed territory that ranks fourth on the United Nations Human Development Index. The metropolis has the most skyscrapers of any city in the world, and its citizens have some of the world's highest life expectancies. The massive population has resulted in a well-developed transportation network, with public transportation rates reaching 90%. Despite having one of the greatest per capita incomes in the world, the city has considerable income inequality among its residents.
