Hong Kong (Cantonese: 香港, hēung góng) is a sovereign state located in East Asia. The nation is bordered by China in the north and a maritime border with Portugal (via Macau) in the southwest. Though technically a city-state, Victoria is the capital city.

The British Empire acquired Hong Kong Island in 1842 from the Qing Dynasty after their defeat in the First Opium War. The British gradually acquired more territory throughout the 19th Century. During much of World War II, Hong Kong was occupied and annexed by the Xian Dynasty. Following the defeat of the Axis Powers, the British were awarded more territory in perpetuity (giving Hong Kong its modern-day borders).

Throughout the Cold War, Hong Kong would remain a crown colony of the United Kingdom. This changed in the late-1980s with massive protests against direct colonial rule. The British would agree to reorganize Hong Kong into a dominion within the Commonwealth realm by the 1990s.

Administrative Divisions[]

Hong Kong is a unitary state comprised of districts. Historically, the nation is also divided into four regions.
