Malta ("Sovereign State of the Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Malta"), also known as Hospitaller Malta, or Malta-Salticovia to distinguish from the Republic of Malta, is a Mediterranean island country localized in the archipelago of the same name along with the Republic of Malta. With an area of 67 km² (26 sq mi), Hospitaller Malta is considered the world's fifth smallest country by area (behind San Marino, Tuvalu, Monaco, and Vatican City).

The history of the Hospitallers in Malta started with the islands of Malta and Gozo, as well as the islands of Rhodes and the city of Tripoli being granted by Holy Emperor Charles V to the Order of Saint John. In 1551, the Ottoman Empire captured the city of Tripoli but failed to capture the Maltese Archipelago in 1565. After the siege, the Order settled in the archipelago, staying there until 1798, when French forces under Napoleon invaded the islands. The Order joined the inhabitants of Gozo and formed a provisional government in the island, that eventually formed the modern state of Hospitaller Malta. The island of Malta turned into a British protectorate, being claimed by the Hospitallers until the Treaty of Valletta, in 1985, which officially ended the War of Malta.

The capital city is Salticovia, named after Nikolai Saltykov, who is celebrated as the father of the new nation. Apart from the Vatican City, the State of Hospitaller Malta is the only absolute monarchy in Europe, associated with the Vatican. The country is ruled by the Prince and Grand Master, who sometimes has a Consultative Assembly. Malta is a member of the Society of Nations, Council of Europe, and the Organization of City-States.
