The House of Bonaparte (also called House of Bonapaart) is a royal European dynasty founded in the 1500's by famous explorer and statesman Lodewijk Bonapaart. Lodewijk and many of his descendants would serve as prominent explorers and admirals during Europe's Age of Discovery, which elevated them to a position of fame across the continent, as well as vast amounts of wealth and various titles, working first for the Kingdom of Burgundy, and later France, Sicily and ultimately the Italian League.

In 1746 Carlo Bonaparte, of the Italian line of the family, would ascend to the title of King of the Italians, having already served since 1734 as First Consul, which would become the House of Bonaparte's first hereditary, monarchical title. Although the most famous branches of the family currently reside in the Italian League and the Kingdom of Burgundy, members of the Bonaparte family reside all across Europe, in various levels of governance.
