Coat of Arms of the House of Della Rovere

The Della Rovere family was a noble family of Italy with humble origins in Savona, in Liguria. In 1443, Francesco Della Rovere was invited by Cardinal Ari V Sturlungur to study Theology in Saint Augustine's University. It didn't take long for francesco to become professor of Theology at the University. Due to the war between Arles and Genoa, Francesco's nephews Luchina and Giuliano Della Rovere were sent to live with him in Rome.

In 1446, Francesco Della Rovere purchased a vineyard near Viterbo. He invested and it started to produce wine. However, due to his position of professor, Francesco didn't have much time to work on it. Then, he called his brother Raffaello Della Rovere, with his family, from Savona to the Papal States and gave the vineyard to him. Raffaello invested in it and the Della Rovere's wine started to become famous in Viterbo and near areas.

In 1447, Francesco Della Rovere attended the funeral of Albert V of Habsburg, the Lord of Poggio Miterto, as a representative of Saint Augustine's University. There he meet Maximilian of Habsburg and the two became friends. Was due to Maximilian influence that Francesco was made the first bishop of the Diocese of Poggio Miterto by Pope Urban V in 1448.

With the arrival of the of Alfons de Borja in Saint Augustine's University to work as professor of canon law, Francesco Della Rovere developed a hatred for the Borja Family that passed on to the other Della Rovere.

In 1457, Cardinal Francesco Della Rovere was able to convince Pope Gregory XIII to make his brother Raffaello Della Rovere as Lord of Viterbo.
