The House of Gagarin (Russian: Гага́рин) is one of the princely noble families of the Russian Empire of Rurikid stock. They are one of the most prominent noble familes that are considered landless, namely in that they don't have a specific place of origin.
The history of the Russian Empire shows that many of the Princes Gagarin, both in ancient times as well as in more recent times, were granted fiefdoms for their service to the fatherland, and they were rewarded with several Orders and other tokens of the Monarch's favor.
During the Russian Civil War, the Gagarins fled to France, but later returned after the Whites and Tsarists under the leadership of Cyril I Vladimirovich, the Grand Duke, succeeding Tsar and cousin of the fallen Nicholas II, re-conquered Russia.
However, during the Interwar Period, half of the House of Gagarin made their wealth outside Russia, namely France and the United States. One of their members, Prince Yuri I Alekseyevich (OTE: Yuri Gagarin, despite the surname the OTE was not a member of the royal Gagarins) become one of the first men into outer space.
The current head is Prince Oleg Fyodorovich Gagarin.
History[]
Post-Civil War[]
After the civil war, the factions of Gagarins were not on good terms with one another, between Prince Nikolay I Sergeyvich's line and Prince Grigory II Grigoryevich's.
Prince Georgy I Grigoryevich Gagarin thus, claimed the headship of the House of Gagarin.
The Grigoryeviches, having survived and endured the Russian Civil War, saw the Sergeyivches as cowards. As a result, the two truly split and went their separate ways for the time-being.
