Coat of Arms of the House of Habsburg

In the Papal States, the House of Habsburg became one of the most influential families with many members of the Albertine Line being Papal Vicars of the Province of the Patrimony of Saint Peter. Pope Clement VI gave to them the title of Lord of Poggio Miterto (Albertine Line) and Lord of Monte San Giovanni Campano (Leopoldinian Line). The Habsburg also became allies of important Italian families, such as the Medici, Spinola and Colonna.

In Poggio Miterto is located the Habsburg Mausoleum, which design was made by Filippo Brunelleschi. There the family also financed the reforms of the old Church of Santa Maria della Pietà, to turn it into a Cathedral. Filippo Brunelleschi also worked in this Church.

After the Markist Schism, Frederick von Habsburg was chosen as Prince of Germany and this title became hereditary.
