The modern Chinese military has its origins in the various military forces that have ruled China overtime, including that of the previous Imperial dynasties, as well as the temporary Armed Forces of the Republic of China prior to the Beifang Army and Kuomintang's absorbsion int othe Empire of China. Both are subsequently considered preceding militaries of China, and the Imperial Chinese Forces inherits their histories.

Currently, China is one of three world military superpowers and as of 2011, ranks #1 in world global rankings. It is divided into the Imperial Ground Forces, Imperial Navy, Imperial Air Force, Imperial Space Force and Imperial Home Guard. It is currently also one of four military powers to have a space force.

Although originally operating Russian and British naval technology, the Imperial Chinese Navy now operates its own indigenous technology. China currently possesses the world's largest air force, and has its own indigenous arms industry, however after the 1990s, it purchased the majority of Russia's aerial military assets nearly doubling the size of its air force.

Some of China's indigenous aircraft include the Kōng-Leit-series (formerly the Lieshen), or the KL series, produced by the Tiāntáng Jīqì Corporation. Its latest procurement is the KL-57, a multi-role stealth warplane, now one of the world's deadliest.
