In 2006, Sydney's population was approximately 3.6 million, with a very large GDP. On June 4, the majority of 73% of citizens of greater Sydney decided to become an independent state. After months of negotiations with Australia, the Republic of Sydney was recognized by almost all countries in the United Nations, and admitted to the UN on September 17, 2011. Today, Sydney has become good trading partner with many countries in the South Pacific and a well-off nation.
