Cold War[]
India was part of the British Raj until 1947 when it declared independence from the UK alongside Pakistan. In 1950, India became one of the first countries to recognize the People's Republic of China as it saw the country as anti-imperialist. However, in October 1962, India and China fought a brief conflict in which China took over Aksai Chin in the Kashmir region. India and Pakistan would see tensions much throughout the Cold War over the "Kashmir Question." In 1974, India tested its first nuclear weapon. In 1987, India almost had another confrontation with China but was resolved diplomatically.
During the 1990s, tensions began to flare up with India and Pakistan. It was alleged that Pakistan supported Islamic terrorists within Indian territory. In 1998, Pakistan tested its first nuclear weapon. Around the final days of December 1999, Indian Airlines Flight 418 was hijacked by Islamic terrorists that demanded the release of terrorist held in an Indian prison. The plane made stops in Pakistan, the UAE, and finally Afghanistan (under the Taliban). In the end, India gave in to the request of the terrorist and released the prisoners in exchange for the safety of the passengers.
As the War on Terror occurred, India and the United States began to have closer ties. A primary concern for the two countries was terrorists that often crossed into Pakistani territory. This is further complicated by the fact the U.S. and Pakistan are allies despite their strained relations. On November 26, 2008, Islamic terrorists attacked Mumbai, killing countless civilians of whom mostly were foreign nationals.
As the 2010s came, India increased its defense budget. The country cooperated with Russia and Israel in developing submarines, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. It was seen as a response to Chinese belligerence in the region. India may soon provide Vietnam with military hardware.
Chinese Insurgency[]
India is allegedly supporting Tibetan rebels in the Tibetan Unrest that broke out in November 2015. In September 2016, Indian troops retook the Chinese-administered areas of Aksai Chin in Kashmir after the PLA withdrew in the area. This caused a diplomatic protests enacted by both the PRC and Pakistan, of which the latter is concerned will take all of Kashmir.
In December, India began building refugee camps in the Indian-administered areas of Kashmir for fleeing Tibetans. Reports have surfaced that Indian forces have been supplying SA-7 Grail MANPADS to the Tibetan insurgents which have begin shooting down PLA aircraft.
