Alternative History

Iowa is a former American state.

Iowa derives its name from the Ioway people, one of the many American Indian tribes that occupied the state at the time of European exploration. Iowa was a part of the French colony of New France. After the Louisiana Purchase, settlers laid the foundation for an agriculture-based economy in the heart of the Corn Belt. In the mid 20th century, Iowa’s agricultural economy transitioned to a diversified economy.

Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Burlington and Sioux City were all destroyed on Doomsday due to Soviet nuclear strikes. Council Bluffs was also destroyed during the attack on Offutt Air Force Base.

There are a few survivor states in Iowa. The Quad Cities Alliance controls parts of eastern Iowa. The short lived Republic of Iowa claimed ownership of the entire state of Iowa, until the city was occupied by the QCA. The Republic of Lincoln also controls some of western Iowa. The remains of failed survivor states have also been discovered at Dubuque and Waterloo. Northern Iowa is part of the North Star Republic with Mason City and Spirit Lake being major cities in the Republic. The United States has Claimed western Iowa as the Iowa Territory but there is little influence in these areas.
