Iran (Persian: ایران Irān), officially the Imperial State of Iran (Persian: کشور شاهنشاهی ایران Keshvar-e Shâhanshâhi-ye Irân), is a country in Central-Western Asia. Iran is a country of particular geopolitical significance owing to its location in three spheres of Asia (West, Central and South). Iran is bordered by the Soviet Union to the north, by Afghanistan and Pakistan to the east, by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to the south, by Iraq to the west, and by Kurdistan to the northwest.

Tehran is the capital, the largest city and the political, cultural, commercial and industrial center of Iran. Iran is a regional power and holds an important position in international energy security and world economy as a result of its large reserves of petroleum and natural gas. Iran is also the only country with Shia Muslim majority which its importance and influence are presented within the Iranian culture and politics.
