Alternative History

The former League of Nations mandate of Mesopotamia and current Kingdom of Iraq under five-year-old King Faisal II of the Hashemite dynasty (true power is with Regent Abdullah) is in the outside still much under the control of Great Britain and internally not getting a rest at all: The various clans own far more guns than the central government, there have been several tried putsches by the Military since the official declaration of independence in 1932, and both the Kurds in the North and the Shiites in the South are discontent. Prime ministers change every few Months, since March of 1940 Rashid Ali al-Gaylani has the office, who's a sympathiser of the Axis Powers.

During 1922-24, the Kurds in the North have proclaimed their own Kingdom, and in 1931, Ahmed Barzani started a new uprising.

The country made a non-aggression pact with Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan, which is directed against the Soviet Union.

Iraq has somewhat more than 4 Million inhabitants. It has huge reserves of crude Oil, which are exploited by the Iraq Petroleum Company, of which 95% (equal parts) are owned by the USA, Great Britain, France, and the Netherlands.
