Ireland (Irish: Aereland) is a kingdom in Europe. It is one of two nations in the British Isles, the other being Great Britain.
The roots of the modern Irish nation stem from the island's conquest by West Germanic tribesmen in the 600s C.E. Ireland became a patchwork of kingdoms for much of the early Middle Ages, frequently raided by Vikings. Eventually, in 1239 James the Great of the Kingdom of Dublin united the island under his rule, repelling both the Vikings and the invading English.
Ireland became one of the Protestant kingdoms who broke off from the Catholic Church in 1534, establishing its own Irish Orthodox Church. The nation became a major colonial power in the Americas throughout the 1500s-1800s, establishing a number of colonies that would later become separate nations.
