History[]
Founding[]
In 1742, 670 Jews led by Rabbi Moshe Ben Shimon emigrated from Constantinople to Yafo, beginning the First Aliyah. During the First Aliyah (1742-1756), 104,000 Jews emigrated to Palestine. By the end of this Aliyah, there were 190,000 Jews in Palestine. By the end of the Second Aliyah (1761-1769), 310,000 Jews were in Palestine, which was controlled by the Zand Dynasty. The Third Aliyah (1774-1781) brought 166,000 Jews, and by the end of the Fourth Aliyah (1782-1788), there were 715,000 Jews in Palestine. In 1789, the Zand Dynasty began to treat the Jews harshly. In response, a descendant of David named Yehoshua Dayan began a revolt that soon spread throughout the land the Jews had settled. The 2 year War of Independence was ended by the collapse of the Zand Dynasty and the rise of the Qajar Dynasty. Yehoshua became Yehoshua I David, King of Israel. The first Knesset elections were held on November 10, 1791.
