Founded in the 1860 by the unification of the Italian Peninsula, the Kingdom of Italy lasted for less than a century, until the royal family was ousted by followers of Benito Mussolini in 1928. However, despite the one-party state government established by Mussolini, there were a number of underground movements, including a royalist group who kept in contact with ousted King Vittorio Emmanuele III. In the late 1930s, when Italy began aligning itself with Nazi Germany, a revolution swept Mussolini's government from power, and recalled the royal family. Now a limited monarchy, Italy is a proud member of the European family of nations and of NATO.
