Italy (Italian: Italia), officially the Italian Federation (Italian: Federazione Italiana) or the Federation of Italy is a country primarily located in Central and Southern Europe. It also includes overseas regions and territories in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Its metropolitan area is formed by the homonymous geographical region, but also reaching the semi-enclave of Dalmatia. Italy shares land borders with Savoy to the northwest, France to the west, Yugoslavia to the east, Danubia to the northeast, and Switzerland to the north. The capital and largest city is Rome, while other major cities are Milan, Nissa and Naples.
After the Italian Wars and the General Crisis that left Italy politically and commercially unstable, rising Italian nationalism, along with other social, economic, and military events, led to a period of revolutionary political upheaval with the old institutions of feudalism and the Italian nobility. The Italian Revolution produced the Declaration of the Rights of Man, while being fully unified under Napoleone Buonaparte. The Revolutionary Wars soon were followed by the Napoleonic Wars.
Following the Congress of Frankfurt, Italy rapidly industrialised, soon surpassing France as a continental power in Europe. In World War I, Italy would be one of the victorious allied powers while gaining Gabon and a few islands from France. Eventually, Italy would be one of the main Allied Powers in World War II, mainly in the Mediterranean campaign. Most of its colonies became independent in the 1960s while retaining close economic ties with Italy.
Italy is a federation, a representative democracy, and a parliamentary republic. A developed country and a great power in global affairs, being one of former permanent members of the Society of Nations Security Council. Italy is also a founding member of the Society of Nations, and a leading member of the European Community, as well as a member of the Latin Union, Group of Seven and the Urecht Compromise. Italy is also considered a cultural superpower, widely influencing art, entertainment, literature and technology.
