Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson (born 27 October 1990) is an Icelandic professional footballer who plays as a winger for Ligue 1 club Lyon and the Iceland national team. Jóhann started his career in the 2009/10 season for Chelsea. He has played with Barcelona and Aston Villa until moving to Lyon in the summer of 2021.

Early Life[]

Born in Reykjavík, Jóhann started his career at Breiðablik, but moved to England early in his career when his parents decided to relocate there. He had spells with the youth team at Chelsea while studying at the International School of London. Jóhann was offered a professional contract in 2008 by Chelsea. He graduated with as an Associate of Science from the ISL.

Career at Chelsea[]

Jóhann made his senior club debut in the opening match of the 2009/10 Premier League against Hull in the MKM Stadium. Jóhann scored his first senior goal in a league match against Sunderland. After his breakthrough season Jóhann would started most games for Chelsea and regularly get on the score sheet which lead up to Chelsea's 2011/12 where they won the FA Cup and the League Cup. After 2 lackluster seasons Chelsea would get back to winning ways as they won the League Cup and the Premier league. Guðmundsson did not renew his contract with Chelsea and was sold to Barcelona for 12 million pounds.

Barcelona[]

He joined Barcelona on a three year deal for the 2015/16 season after the Blaugranas hadn't won the Spanish League for 10 seasons. Most people had predicted Villarreal getting their back to back league titles. Jóhann made serious difference for Barca as the team and the team landed the Domestic double. His second season saw Barcelona become the third La Liga team to go invincible and he was announced to become captain of the Barcelone squad for the 2017/18 season. The season became historic for the Spanish team as they won their first UEFA Champions League title in a 2 - 0 against Guðmundsson's old club Chelsea where Jóhann scored the opening goal, the squad also won the Spanish League and the Spanish Cup. Barcelona would have a bad 2018/19 season placing 7th place and losing the Copa Del Rey Final to Vicente Rodríguez's Valencia. Jóhann's contract wasn't renewed and he was brought back to England on a free transfer.

Aston Villa and Lyon[]

Jóhann was brought to Birmingham for a free transfer on a 2 year deal. The newly promoted Aston Villa were predicted for a bottom place finish the Premier League and early signs didn't look positive for the Lions. Although Jóhann and his midfield partner Jack Grealish were scoring goals they were the only 2 to score goals for Villa in the league until December. Guðmundsson's proudest Villa moment came when the Claret and Blues were 2 - 0 down in the League Cup Final against Manchester City and scored a hat-trick to win the Cup 3 - 2. Aston Villa saved themselves from relegation on the last day on the London stadium with 5 minutes left of the season. Jóhann's second season at Villa was a lot smoother as the team had their best Premier League start ever and the team finished 11th. During the summer Guðmundsson asked to leave Villa Park and was picked up by Olympique Lyonnais for 4 million pounds. Jóhann scored on debut against Reims. He became a star player in his teams treble winning season, he scored the winning goal in the Champions League Final against Liverpool and provided Maxwell Cornet with an assist in the Coupe de France final against Brest.

International Career[]

Jóhann played his first U21 match for Iceland on 12 June 2008. Then on 12 August 2008, Jóhann was called up the national team for the first time. Jóhann won his first cap for Iceland in a friendly match against Azerbaijan, where he set up a goal.

On 6 September 2013 Jóhann scored a hat-trick, the first person to do so for Iceland in 13 years, in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Switzerland, equalizing with the last goal of the match, a left-footed, curling shot from the edge of the 18-yard box in the 91st minute, with the match finishing 4–4.

He was selected for UEFA Euro 2016 squad for Iceland and played his first UEFA Euro 2016 match, where he set up a goal for Birkir Bjarnason. This was the country's first ever goal in a major tournament when Birkir scored the equalizer against Portugal in their first group match. On 27 June 2016, Jóhann played against England in the UEFA Euro 2017 round of 16 at the Stade de Nice, as Iceland upset England with a 2–1 victory to advance to the quarter-finals. They drew a weakened France who had lost Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Hugo Lloris due to Hantavirus infections but still through Benjamin Pavard the French got over but a dramatic head in the 93rd minute by Alfreð Finnbogason they got to extra time. In the 97th minute of extra time N’Golo Kante slotted the ball into the left corner but in the 122nd minute Halldór Flosason nutmegged Steve Mandanda and it hit the post and went in, that took them to penalties and an unfortunate slip by Mandanda during Joey Guðjónsson’s penalty lead to Iceland going through 5-4 to face Germany. A strong Germany looked for a trophy for the retiring Joachim Löw but a relatively boring match turned brutal as newly crowned English Champion with Tottenham Gylfi Sigurðursson horror tackled Serge Gnabry who pleaded for a penalty but was denied and a few passes later Iceland were breaking forward and the ball was passed to Gylfi inside the box when Gnabry yanked his foot underneath him and penalty was given which Gylfi took and scored, in the 89th minute Germany got a penalty which Thomas Müller took but Hannes Halldórsson saved and kicked forward and the ball fell to Joey Guðjónsson who ran forward passed goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and stopped in front of the goal and put in a Rabona. In the final Iceland would face Portugal who were denied a championship by the “Everyman’s Euros” of Bulgaria 12 years earlier. Iceland played quite defensive football but in the 67th got a corner which was headed away by Nani but Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson hit the volley which hit the crossbar down and then out of the goal and goalkeeper Rui Patricio gathered the ball but VAR showed the ball going in. It ended up the winning goal securing Iceland the championship and the continuation of the “Everyman’s Euros.”

Jóhann is engaged to Icelandic Lawyer Hólmfríður Björnsdóttir. He has 2 children with her, a daughter (2016) and a son (2021).
