History
Formation
Following the end of the Japanese Civil War, revolutionaries founded the Democratic People's Republic of Japan. This new country, however, began experiencing sharp ideological differences with America, leading to the Japanese-American Split. A new alliance was set up between the two countries: the "Communist League". Most territories of the Empire of Japan had either become independent (such as Southern Korea) or been annexed by China (such as Taiwan).
Cold War
Relations with America proved short-lived, as Nosaka's authoritarian style and brutal crackdown on political dissent was unpopular with most Americans and their government, which recently experienced a coup. By 1993, Japan began a series of economic reforms to incorporate aspects of capitalism into its economy. Japan's economy partially recovered with the end of the planned economy, but did not fully recover until after the opening of Japan to the outside world.
Later history
By today, Japanese citizens experience from the forty-second best standard of living, the thirty-sixth lowest infant mortality, the thirteenth-largest industry, the world's twenty-third most corrupt and forty-seventh most unstable government. Japan has a rapidly-growing economy, and in just twenty years has pushed millions of citizens out of poverty and repaired most Japanese infrastructure. Japan has the world's third largest economy, and is expected to surpass China by the 2050s.
