The Japanese Civil War (Japanese: 日本の内戦) was a civil war in Japan that took place from 1929 to 1936, and was fought between democratic factions and warlord factions within the Japanese government. The war was the most bloody conflict in 20th century Japan, with over twenty million deaths in total.

After the Japanese loss in the Great War, Japan went into a brief period of isolation until the early 1920s, as the government heavily reformed itself. However, after the war, more military generals joined the Imperial Diet, wanting to seize power. A large number of democrats also joined the government, wanting to convert Japan into a democratic nation to survive. Shunroku Hata was the leading figure in the military faction, with his ideas of a perfect Japan being one where "the true might of the Japanese Empire can be reached, where she can thrive in the world and fight anyone who dares ruin that might". As for the democratic faction, they were lead by Tokugawa Iesato, who himself believed in good democratic faith compared to Hata. Tensions between the two factions ultimately escalated in July 1929, and ultimately the government collapsed into conflict.
