Johannia, officially the Kingdom of Johannia, is a North American insular nation off the coast of Alaska and Canada. It shares a maritime border with Russia, Canada, and the United States. It is a constitutional monarchy which originally shared a monarch with Liechtenstein until 1929, when it was diverted upon the death of its namesake Johann II. Its main export is energy-efficient cars as Tesla has its factories exclusively in Johannian islands, which provides the natives with employment.
Its surface area of 48,151 square kilometers makes Johannia the tenth-largest country in North America and the 119th-largest in the world. With a population of over 800,500 inhabitants according to the 2019 census, it is the 11th-most populous country in North America and the 129th in the world.
History[]
Johannia is the homeland of the indigenous Kaigani Haida people. Kaigani is a mispronunciation of the Tlingit word x'aax' aani, which translates to "crabapple country". On September 20, 1793, George Vancouver gave the name "Prince of Wales Archipelago" to all the islands of the southern Alexander Archipelago, which he suspected to have a single major island; the name referred to George, Prince of Wales.
In 1867, when the Russians wanted to sell the territory of Alaska, they initially reached out to Prince Johann II of Liechtenstein, but the Prince could not buy the whole territory, so he bought only the Prince of Wales Island instead, purchasing settlers from Bavaria with the promise of land. The settlers founded the nation's capital, New Vaduz, and the first National Assembly was gathered to decide the title of the head of State, in which the title Duke of Johannia was decided upon.
In 1929, upon the death of Duke Johann, he left in his will that a Prime Minister be chosen to rule in his stead and that the National Assembly be called to decide upon his successor. After ten hours, the late Duke's nephew Aloys, 7th Prince of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg, was chosen as his successor.
In the 1950s, President Earl Warren of the United States allowed captured Canadian territories to decide which nation to join. The Vancouver and Queen Charlotte islands joined the Duchy, elevating its status from duchy to kingdom. The city of Ketchikan held a referendum to join Johannia in 1975. Future islands that have been planning to join include Kupreanof Island, Baranof Island, Chichagof Island, and Admiralty Island.
Foreign relations[]
Since 1989, Johannia is an observer nation in the Germanic League. During the Anglo-American War, they remained neutral under Russian pressure. The Johannians have a longstanding relationship with Russia. The country is very much Germanic; the official language of Johannia is German but the upper class usually speaks Teedish, making it a unique case where Teedish serves a purpose other than diplomacy and international communication. The children must learn three languages by 18: German, English and a third language of their choice.
Sports and entertainment[]
The National sport is hockey and the national team is very highly ranked, having won the Olympic Gold in Hockey (1978, 2002) the Stanley Cup several times (1967, 1970, 1975, 1989, 2000, 2014, 2015). The main local teams are: the Johann Island Seals, the Aloys Bank Beavers, and the New Vaduz Barons, with ten additional teams that play in the Pro League.
The Johannian national football team's best showing was at the 2001 North American Gold Cup, which they finished in 4th place. The most capped player for the national team is son of Prime Minister James Greaves, Edward Greaves who appeared 102 times for the Grand Princes from 1987 up until 2010 scoring 21 goals. Johannia has one professional football team, New Vaduz Football Club, which competes in the Major League Soccer division in the United States but the semi-professional side Johannesville United, formed in 2008, was recently promoted to the MLS 3rd tier.
The channels in Johannia are F1 with all of the essentials news, weather and sports and good time TV with cartoons, dramas, comedies, etc. The locals can also subscribe to American, Canadian, Russian and Japanese channels.
