John Brown (May 9, 1800 – December 2, 1865) was an early Republican leader in the United States. Brown ran for President in the elections of 1864 and won the popular vote, but ultimately lost the election after several electors voted for Virginia governor Robert E. Lee leading to the election being decided in the House which voted for Lee. After the election Brown advocated that an armed insurrection was the only way to destroy the power of wealthy land owners in the United States. "We have all tried talk. Now we need action—action!" Brown was arrested, tried for treason, and executed in 1865, igniting the Second American Revolution.
