John Charles Fremont (February 12, 1809 – July 13, 1890) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 12th President of the United States from 1857 to 1861. He would be nominated as the first ever Republican Candidate and would win the Presidency in November 1856 after he defeated his two opponents in the election, the Democratic Nominee, Senator James Buchanan and Former President Millard Fillmore. He would also start a chain of Republican Presidents that would start with him and would continue until the 1884 Presidential Election when the Governor of New York and the Democratic Nominee, Grover Cleveland, defeated the Republican Nominee James G. Blaine.
