John Jarvis Barnette (born July 31, 1924) is the current junior United States Senator from Maryland and a member of the Democratic Party, serving since 1974. He previously served as in the United States House of Representatives from 1969 to 1974, and as the Secretary of State of Maryland from 1963 to 1967.
Born and raised in the western Maryland city of Hagerstown, Barnette attended the University of Pennsylvania and earned both a BA and an MA in Political Science. He became a prominent campaign manager and speechwriter for the Democratic candidates during the 1950 and 1954 Maryland gubernatorial elections, which allowed him to easily win an open seat in the Maryland Senate in 1958 due to his favorability with state party bosses and other allies in the political machine. These same political forces helped him be appointed as Maryland's Secretary of State in 1963 following the death of the previous one. He was elected to the federal House of Representatives in 1969 and defeated the re-election attempt of incumbent U.S. Senator Charles Mathias in 1974.
During his tenure in the Senate, Barnette has served on various committees including the Finance Committee, the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, and the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.
