Jordan (Arabic: المملكة الأردنية الهاشمية), officially the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a semi-arid country located in Western Asia in the Middle Eastern region. Jordan was originally founded as the Emirate of Transjordan, it's Emir, Abdullah I ruled the country for more than 20 years until it finally achieved it's independence from the United Kingdom in which he later became the King of Jordan from 1946-1951. 2 years after it's establishment, Jordan faced a war against Israel with the start of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Jordanian troops captured the West Bank and kept it until it was lost to Israel in the Six Day War. Jordan would officially renounce its claim on the West Bank in 1988 and became the second Arab state to formally sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1994. Jordan is a constitutional monarchy but the king holds wide executive and legislative powers. Jordan is home to around 10 million people and is the eleventh most populous Arab country. The country is mostly dominated by Sunni Muslims with an indigenous Christian minority. Jordan was mostly spared from the events of the Arab Spring in 2010 and was even called the "oasis of stability" in the Middle East. Jordan is home to around 1.4 Syrian refugees and thousands of Iraqi Christians. Jordan, despite being a small country ranks high in the Human Development Index and has an upper middle economy. Tourism is also a major player in Jordan's economy, especially when it comes to medical tourism where people mostly seek medical treatment in the country. Jordan would support Palestine in the 2019 Arab-Israeli War but is not directly involved in the conflict.
