After being elected to the State Senate in 1976 he became the Minority Leader in 1982 and lead his party to a Majority in 1986.

He was Majority Leader for 2 years until he was nominated for Mayor of Savannah, he defeated incumbent Kevin McAlly with 52% of the votes. He was re-elected in 1992 and 1996. In 2002 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Georgia serving under [[Barkley Perry (Alternate Politics)|Barkley Perry]]. He was often inclined to side with the Senate but also gained from Perry’s Popularity, he was re-elected in 2006 with 57%.

Joshua Derrick (b. 19 March 1950) is an American Democratic Politician who served as Governor of Georgia from 2011 until 2015 and is currently serving as Secretary of Agriculture since January 21st, 2017.
