Buttigieg was assassinated on December 5, 2024 while visiting Coral Gables, Florida. Within minutes of the announcement of his death, Harris was quickly sworn by NAME TBD at the Number One Observatory Circle, where she was staying. Concurrently, the nation was undergoing a series of unrest following the loss of Buttigieg in the 2024 presidential election.

As Harris assumed office, she asked for the current Cabinet to remain in place. She had also quickly nominated Senator Chris Murphy to the office of vice president, to which Congress quickly confirmed him.
