Karl V of the Luxemburger dynasty was born in 1456 as the son of Heinrich III of Tyrol and his wife. When his father died, he inherited East Tyrol and also was proclaimed Roman king by his followers. There were two other princes who also claimed the title, however. After the Twenty-Year War, he finally succeeded in 1495 by defeating anti-king Otto of Brandenburg. In 1502, he also inherited Luxemburg, the homeland of his dynasty.
