1st January

In a New Year's Day announcement, the ruling families of both Cleveland and Northumberland reveal that their respective heirs, Princess Zara and George, Earl Percy, are expecting a child in April. Both governments follow with their own announcements that the royal birth will form an important part of their own process of unification.

17th January

With the announcement of the coming royal birth, the governments of Cleveland conducts a poll on the preferred name for the country once the Kingdoms of Cleveland and Northumbria unite. The poll asks a representative sample of 971 people of voting age.

There are several possibilities. They are as follows with results:

  • Kingdom of Northumbria - 720
  • The United Kingdoms - 148
  • Northern England - 34
  • Cleveland-Northumberland - 32
  • Northumberland-Cleveland - 25
  • all others - 12

14th May 2010

PM Mallon announces that going forward, the Kingdom of Cleveland will consider its territory to encompass all the land south of the Tyne, north of the Humber, and east of the Pennines. This includes all of the pre-1983 counties of North and West Yorkshire as well as the pre-1974 East Riding of Yorkshire.

Exclusion zones (EZs) affect the level of actual control within these claims. For example, Cleveland has no actual presence within 20 miles of the River Tyne.

For years Cleveland has supported some of the small outlying communities of this region with supplies, including the long-wave radios that serve as the main infrastructure for communication in many rural areas. These efforts will continue; Mallon plans to add to them with more detailed geographic surveys and future electrification projects.

21st May 2010

Referendum day in the Kingdom of Cleveland for inclusion into the Celtic Alliance, initial outgoing polls indicate that the vote will be no; however votes will be finished counting on the 27th with the results announced on the 28th.

28th May 2010

At 10am the results of the referendum on the Kingdom of Cleveland joining the Celtic Alliance. The vote was as follows:

  • Yes - 17%
  • No - 83%

the voter turnout was 78%.

Prime Minister Mallon makes a statement at 11am that the people of Cleveland had spoken and the kingdom will not join the Alliance. Furthermore, the "no" vote will not affect the growing relations of friendship and commerce between Cleveland and the CA.

4 June

Election day was on the 2nd June, results were announced on the 4th June:

  • The Labour party wins the most votes with 16 seats.
  • Prime Minister Mallon's Royalist party wins 12 seats.
  • The Conservative Party wins 7 seats.

Despite winning the most seats, the Labour Party falls short of a majority. Instead, the leader of the Conservative Party has offered to join with PM Ray Mallon's Royalist Party in a Tory/Royalist coalition. This keeps Prime Minister Ray Mallon in power for the fourth straight election cycle. The coalition with the Tories requires some changes. Jason McCartney has been announced as the new Deputy PM and Conservative MP James Blenkinsop made Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Labour will form the parliamentary opposition.

This parliamentary vote was the first to cover some of the inland towns of the East Riding of Yorkshire, namely Beverley, Pocklington and Driffield. The East Riding has an area of 2479 km² (957 Sq. Miles). Its population is estimated at 12,000 people. East Yorkshire was hit by one 100KT nuclear blast over Kingston upon Hull (often shortened to Hull), and there were tactical blasts at RAF Breighton and RAF Leconfield.

The recent construction of several wind turbines along the Holderness coast has provided power in the area for the first time since Doomsday. Plans are underway to link the area with the National Rail network of Cleveland with one line from Harrogate to Tadcaster, Selby, Beverley, Driffield, and Bridlington; and a circular route from Middlesbrough, Whitby, Scarborough, Malton, and avoiding nuked York onward to Nothallerton and back to Middlesbrough. Both are hoping to be in service be 2014.

10th June 2010

Prime Minister Mallon announces a bill to significantly increase the number of members of Cleveland's parliament for the next election. Parliament will grow from 35 to 60 members. This will involve dividing some constituencies into smaller areas as well as including villages and surrounding areas claimed on the 14th May 2010. In a speech before Parliament Mallon says that increasing the number of MP's will reflect the growth of the kingdom as well as help with the voting in of new laws - currently, he argues, there are too many hung parliaments over legislative votes.

The East Riding of Yorkshire will be split into five parliamentary constituencies, based around the five main towns of the area, each area having an MP.

The bill also states that the next election will be in the 1st week in May 2015 and that the length of any parliament will be a maximum of five years.

Lost Nuke

12th June

Three teenagers are admitted to James Cook Hospital suffering severe radiation sickness. All three of their families are also suffering from burns of much less severity. The group had been on a camping trip in Hamsterley Forest within 3 days of being admitted to hospital. An army team is dispatched to the thick woodland to investigate.

13th June

Army personnel with the help of Cleveland mountain rescue begin searching the thick woodland. They seal off the area, using descriptions provided by the victims' families. A search fails to pinpoint the location of the undetonated nuclear warhead by the end of the day.

14th June

At mid-morning, a Cleveland army team identifies above-normal radiation levels in the Hamsterley Forest. At 4pm two personnel discover an area of dead trees and minimal undergrowth and measure a very elevated level of radiation. At the center they find an eroded crater, about 2 metres wide and 50cm deep. They set up an exclusion zone at a safe distance around the site.

15th June

Cleveland mobilizes a team of radiation specialists who work in the decomissioning project at the Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station. The team make their way into the sealed area and begin a cautious excavation around the small crater discovered the previous day. After digging for about and hour they start to discover shards of metal. By mid-morning they have exposed a large metal object approximately 1 metre long and 50 cm diameter. Radiation levels near the object are several thousand times higher than normal.

From photographs of the site, the defence ministry in Middlesbrough identifies the object as a probable 100 kilotonne nuclear warhead.

16th June

A request has gone out to the Celtic Alliance Defence Force to find people with the knowledge to defuse a nuclear warhead.

One of the three campers who was exposed to the undetonated nuclear warhead has died in hospital in Middlesbrough. The other two remain in treatment.

18th June

James Cook Hospital confirms the deaths of all three teenaged campers who stumbled upon an unexploded nuclear warhead in Hamsterley Forest last week.

The Celtic Defence Force informs Cleveland that experts in nuclear bomb deactivation are unlikely to be found. However, the Alliance has experience in nuclear decontamination and will assemble a team to help Cleveland contain the warhead safely and clean up the site.

22nd June

Dr James McClaren, Archbishop of Durham, announces plans to restore Durham Cathedral to its prewar condition. Durham Cathedral was badly damaged during the years following Doomsday, when Durham city was overwhelmed with survivors from the Tyne valley. Most of the windows have broken and significant moisture damage affected the roof of the east end. Repairing will take roughly 10 years and is expected to be completed by 2020.

At the same time PM Mallon announces that Durham Castle will also be rebuilt and be used as a base for the Cleveland Military as the meander of the river is easy to defend and can be used as a base for operations to the north.

30 June

A team of experts in nuclear decontamination, together with military personnel skilled in conventional explosives, has assembled in Hamsterley Forest near the cordoned-off site of an unexploded nuclear warhead. The team includes personnel from Cleveland, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. They begin the delicate task of building a container around it.

9 July

The Cleveland-CA team tells the press that the Hamsterley Forest warhead has been sealed in a double lead lined box.

18th July 2010

Prime Minister Mallon announces a referendum for joining the Organisation of British Nations. The vote will be on October 22nd.

29 July

Cleveland's defence ministry reveals that at some time during the last few weeks, the undetonated nuclear warhead was removed from the site where it was discovered last month. Details of the operation are still classified. The lead container was removed from the woodland. Unknown to the local population, it was transported to the coast and onto a waiting boat. The boat carried the warhead to a point in North sea as far as possible from usual shipping routes, where it was allowed to gently sink to the bottom.

28th August 2010

Prime Minister Ray Mallon announces that he is going to retire at the next election in May 2015 (when he will be 60 years old). At that election the deputy Prime Minister Harry Jackman will be expected to take the leadership of the Royalist Party.

30 August 2010

The Cumbria Co-operative contact the Cleveland government about worrying military developments across the border in Scotland. Cleveland agree to send 500 TA personnel as well as 40 cavalry to Cumbria's northern border. George Percy, the Duke of Northumberland, commits a further 100 militia personnel ti Cumbria's defence.

7th September 2010

Local Northallerton mountaineer Alan Hinkes announces that he will lead a team to Nepal in 2011 with hopes of becoming the first Clevelander to climb Mount Everest. He is due to fly from Dublin via Sicily and the UAE to Kathmandu in January with hopes of climbing to base camp by mid March and making a summit run in late May.

Royal visit of King Andrew of South Africa

1st October 2010

At 10am King Andrew of the Dominion of South Africa arrives in the port of Hartlepool. He is met by PM Mallon and several hundred Cleveland citizens and travels by train to the capital Middlesbrough, where he meets Princess Regent Zara (his niece) and her two young sons. He has lunch at the parliament buildings in Nunthorpe.

After lunch he travels by car to the Royal Palace at Wynyard to meet with his sister Queen Anne II and her husband James, while there he also meets with George Percy, Duke of Northumberland and members of his family. He spends the night in the palace of Wynyard.

2nd October 2010

King Andrew accompanied by the Princess Regent Zara begins a tour of the Kingdom of Cleveland. They start by visiting the Cathedral of Ripon where he consecrates a memorial to the victims of Doomsday. he then travels on to open a new rail line in Harrogate and then on to Whitby where he is presented with a jet sculpture. He returns to the Royal palace at Wynyard for the evening.

In Harrogate, a reporter asks Andrew about a few issues around the British Isles region. On Northern Ireland, the king praises the "loyalty" of those in Ulster who remained loyal to his mother and family.

3rd October 2010

King Andrew is announced as Prince Michael of York's new Godfather at Sunday service at the Church of St Mary's of Norton before heading back to Hartlepool, where he re-boards the South African ship and leaves port at 1pm local time. Andrew will sail to the Isle of Man, his final stop before returning to his new home.

Andrew's comment the day before sparks offence and controversy. The governments of East Ulster, West Ulster, and the Republic of Ireland have all issued statements urging the king to speak more cautiously. Journalists have issued sharper criticisms, calling the comment "an entitled rant" and "a failed opportunity to rally the British people". A radio commentator in Northern Ireland says on air that "peace is earned by hard work, not by escaping to Africa."

4 October 2010

As Andrew's royal visit comes to an end, further reports emerge that cause further public controversy. During the king's 1 October meeting with Cleveland dignitaries in Wynyard, Andrew made what were perceived as disrespectful comments to his sister, thanking her "for keeping the throne warm" for him. When this offended visiting local leaders, he defended himself by saying that he still considered himself to be the king of the British people, prompting one MP to reply, "Not in Cleveland, you muppet." Anne managed to smooth over the confrontation before it escalated much further. This comes amid another leak from a source close to the Palace saying that Andrew had apparently been indignant that Anne had turned Balmoral over to the north Scottish government to convert into a hospice and medical school.

Some have speculated that the leaks were intentionally placed by the Palace as a way to enhance the legitimacy of Anne and Zara. Whether this is true or not, the reports have certainly hurt the king's reputation in Cleveland and elsewhere in northern England.

16 October 2010

The expected invasion of Cumbria by the Scottish military has not, so far, occurred. Northumberland has withdrawn all its troops, while Cleveland has withdrawn its cavalry units as well as 200 of its TA personnel. The remaining 300 personnel will remain in Cumbria to train its newly formed militia. They will also establish checkpoints along the border with Scotland and a secure radio link with Cleveland.

22nd October

After investigations and scientific measurements of the bombed cities of Newcastle and Sunderland, the exclusion zones around the cities have been reduced. The EZs are reduced to 1 mile from the detonation points.

Although the exclusion zones have been reduced, the population of the area remains very low, and land will not be made available for sale. The state will issue contracts for managing the woodlands for building materials, as the wood has been found to have minimal to no radiation present.

24th October 2010

After counting all vote cost in the referendum about joining the OBN on the 22nd of October, results are announced on Sunday 24th October, they are as follows:

  • total number of registered voters for referendum - 113,567
  • total number of (non-spoiled ballots) votes cast - 98,752

Results

  • Yes to joining OBN - 69,894
  • No to joining OBN - 28,858

It's borders will run from the coast at Seaton Sluice west along the old A190 to the A19 to Seaton Burn, then west to Ponteland, south the Heddon on the Wall across the Tyne to Stanley, east to Chester le street, Houghton le Spring and eastward to the coast at Seaham.

The area within those borders will be left to return to nature. There are approximately 150 people living in the new national park. These people will not be asked to leave, but no new people will be allowed to move to the area for the foreseeable future (except for close family members) and no new buildings will be allowed within the park, the exception being replacements for existing building or improvements to the efficiency of buildings and farms.

13th November 2010

The first train (The 'Queen Anne II') from Middlesbrough arrives at North Berwick at 2.30pm. It carries dignitaries from Cleveland and Northumberland who are expected to meet with local leaders on Sunday. The return journey is expected on Monday 15th at 12pm, and a regular service is due to start early in 2011. Despite growing tension with the Peebles-based Scottish government, the decentralised nature of southern Scotland means that Cleveland and Northumberland continue to enjoy good relations with the towns along the east coast. The political, financial, and engineering effort to restore the rail line began nearly five years ago.

24th November 2010

It was announced that due to her ongoing problems associated with her injuries received in April, Queen Anne II will step down from the throne of the Kingdom of Cleveland on the 31st December 2010, at that point Princess Regent Zara will ascend to the throne as Queen Zara. It is hoped that over the next few years European Elk (Moose) from the Nordic Union, Red Deer and Pine Martins from the Celtic Alliance, and possibly European Lynx from the Nordic Union could be released into the National Park. After talks with the Commonwealth of East Poland, it is hoped that it can provide Wisent (European Bison) and Koniks horse from the Białowieża Forest in the future.

31st December 2010

Preparations are underway for the planned abdication of Queen Anne II and the accession of Queen Zara which is planned to occur at midnight. It will be the first time in the history of both Cleveland and the former United Kingdom that the accession of a new monarch has been planned so far in advance and also will be visible to the general public, as both Queens will be present at a royal gala at Wynyard Hall for the New Year celebrations.

The report predicts that 60% will have electricity by the start of the next year, with schools, medical offices, and other public facilities being the first places to get connected.

11th March 2011

Mountaineer Alan Hinkes arrives in Nepal after a one and a half month journey. He expects to be at the main base camp of Mount Everest by the 24th of March and a first attempt on the summit in mid May.

26th March 2011

After delays in Nepal caused by late heavy snows, Alan Hinkes arrives in south base camp. His plans are to acclimatise at 5,360 m for two weeks before making exploratory climbs on the southeast ridge. He expects that due to the time since the last major expedition to the area, he will have to re-pin and re-rope the majority of the ridge, particularly the Khumbu icefall. This is expected to take about a week. After re-rigging from south base camp to base camp I, he will move to base camp I for the re-rigging of the the path from Base camp I (6,065m) to Base Camp IV (7,920m). This is expected to take between two and three weeks.

He expects to arrive in Base camp IV in early May with an attempt on the summit (8,848m) within two days of arrival.

28th March 2011

The twice weekly Route Two train service carrying an approximated 140 people, running from Middlesbrough to North Berwick in Scotland, has not arrived. After a 2 hour delay, a relief train is sent from Middlesbrough as it is assumed that the train pulling the Route Two train had broken down. However the relief train ran the full journey to North Berwick without finding the missing train. A search by Northumberland and Cleveland troops has begun.

29th March 2011

At 1am the Route Two train service arrived in North Berwick. It was carrying 142 passengers and crew and another 127 refugees. According to the crew, the train was stopped just outside of Dunbar by a militia group claiming to be from Peebles, the capital of southern Scotland. After taking over the train they diverted it down a side track to the south where the refugees were loaded, it appears that the refugees are traders and families from the Celtic Alliance, and that are being deported from the areas claimed by Southern Scotland.

The governments of the Celtic Alliance, the Kingdom of Cleveland and the Duchy of Northumberland have called the hijacking totally unacceptable.

30th March 2011

After the shock announcement from Northumberland of the death of Duchess Isobel, George Earl Percy and Queen Zara of Cleveland have travelled to Alnwick to plan the state funeral with Duke George.

All railway service running north from Berwick-on-Tweed has been cancelled until further notice. The Royal Cleveland Territorial Army have sent three divisions north to assist the Northumberland Army and Cumbrian militia in guarding the Scottish border. The situation is especially delicate in Berwickshire and Roxburghshire, two Scottish shires with political links to Northumberland.

30th April 2011

Railway crews complete a survey for a line from Beverley to the town of Hessle on the River Humber. They hope that the line will be able to cross the Humber Bridge (if it is structurally safe) to the OBN nations in the south.

2nd May 2011

Alan Hinkes has made his first attempt on the summit of Mount Everest. He was turned back with 500 feet to go due to heavy weather, he expects the weather to break on the 7th or 8th of May at which point he will make another attempt.

6th May 2011

The weather has broken around Mount Everest and is expected to stay fine for the next few days. Mountaineer Alan Hinkes has said he expects that the attempt will begin before daybreak on the 7th of May.

8th May 2011

Alan Hinkes returns to Base Camp IV after successfully reaching the summit of Mount Everest at just before 11am on the 7th of May 2011. He has severe frostbite to his left hand after losing his outer glove in the summit while taking photographs. He expects to be returning to the Kingdom of Cleveland by the end of the month.

13th May 2011

Alan Hinkes begins his return home to Cleveland with an estimated time of arrival before the end of the month. PM Mallon says that there will be a parade upon his return.

15th May 2011

The truce between Celtic Alliance and Southern Scottish forces brings hope that peace can return to the region. If it holds, commercial rail service from Berwick to Berwick could begin as early as Friday 20th May. Crews will inspect the line to check for any damage, as well as potential booby traps set by Scottish militias.

23rd May 2011

PM Mallon announces that there will be a parade on Wednesday and the Royal Palace of Wynyard issues a statement that Hinkes will be knighted on Saturday for his achievement.

6th June 2011

After engineers from the Royal Cleveland Territorial Army (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) have surveyed the Humber Bridge and have announced that it is structurally unsafe and can reopen to road traffic only after extensive reconstruction. With the kingdom committed to a number of other major infrastructure projects, rebuilding the bridge cannot be expected to start before late 2012 or 2013.

The REME are continuing works on surveying the bridge for possible future railway link. The bridge was designed for car traffic carrying loads of between 100 and 150 tonnes, so a railway would be within structural limits.

Plans are to adapt the central two lanes will to a railway, with the two outside lanes being renovated to carry road traffic. Speed limits would be set at 45 mph for both road and rail. A lower deck will be renovated to be a foot bridge.

The restored bridge would be the longest single-span suspension bridge in the British Isles and the second longest in Europe behind the Nordic Union's East Great Belt bridge.

17th June 2011

Studies of the Humber Bridge are complete. REME troops heading for the Cleveish base in Barton-upon-Humber are preparing a railcar ferry that will supply the Cleveish base for the forthcoming Lincolnshire Infrastructure project, which includes the beginning of construction on a southbound rail line through the county. Afterward the ferry will remain open to the public.

25th June

The Cleveland Railways Company prepares to renovate the 22-mile rail line from Barton-upon-Humber to the town of Grimsby. The majority of the course follows existing lines, but it is in need of repair and the points and signal system will need refitting. It is hoped that the rail line will be completely operational by the end of the year.

Surveys will also be conducted in August for a 15-mile side link between Habrough (on the Barton-Grimsby line) to the town of Scunthorpe in the west. Construction will begin in 2012.

The next section of line to be refitted will run from Skegness to Boston in the Parts of Holland, a 20 mile section which could be completed in 2012. The next section will run from Grimsby to Skegness via Mablethorpe. This line does not exist at present and will have to be built from scratch. The 50-mile section will take approximately a year to build with work expected to start in September.

If the locals are willing then the old line will be renovated and refitted from Scunthorpe, via Gainsborough to Retford and Worksop, but this line will not be started until the local area has affiliated with the OBN.

26th June 2011

The Cleveland Coal Board approves a plan to reopen several coal mines in the Selby area and reactivate the abandoned Drax coal-fired power station. Work on the station could begin as early as the summer of 2012. The project will also require construction and renovation on old rail lines linking the mines with the power station.

Although the power station has six banks of electricity generators, only three will operate at any one time, allowing maintenance on the other three. This means that once completed it will have a generating capacity of 2000 MW per year.

Other power stations that may undergo renovation are Ferrybridge (1200MW) and Eggborough (1000MW). When these power stations come online, not only will there be enough electricity for Cleveland but enough to sell 500MW to the Parts of Holland.

30th June 2011

Preparations are underway for the General Census of East Yorkshire which will begin tomorrow.

July to September

1st July 2011

The General Census of the county of East Yorkshire begins today. Every household must record everyone who is at their residence at the time of reporting (whether they live there or are just visiting) they must record:

The count will be conducted throughout the month of July and results are to be published before the end of 2011.

3rd July

Agreements have been made with town leaders in Scunthorpe, Gainsborough, Worksop and Retford to extend the Humber-Grimsby rail line through their towns.

5th July 2011

After the renovation work is complete on the power station at Drax, Ferrybridge and Eggborough work will begin on the West Burton power station near the Newolland town of Gainsborough. It will produce 1500 MW, enough to power Gainsborough, Scunthorpe, Retford and Worksop.

6th July 2011

In a show of support for the allied states Woodbridge, Essex and the Parts of Holland, Cleveland pledges to support any armed action approved by the Organisation of British Nations in Lincolnshire or its adjoining historic counties. Cleveland offers to commit RCTA troops from the regiments of The Royal Green Jackets, The Dragoon Guards and the Queens Own Hussars as well as 250 Marines. Northumberlands commits a further 500 of its own troops. The military threat comes after the OBN warned the True British Army to cease attacks in the East Anglia region - themselves a retaliation for OBN operations in Kent earlier this summer. The planned assault is aimed squarely at the TBA base at Rutland Water, the main headquarters for the militant group since being driven out of positions further east last year. Observers predict that the OBN could be ready to launch an attack by late August.

10th September 2011

Reports from ocean vessels in the North Sea describe a growing storm heading for the British Isles. The Northumberland and Cleveland governments advise their populace to prepare for a possible windstorm hitting between the 11th and 13th September.

14th September 2011

There has been extensive damage in the north of Durham and the western part of Yorkshire from the September storm. 127 building were damaged to a point where they will have to be demolished. A further 1000 buildings or more were damaged in some way.

The death toll continues to rise. It currently stands as seven: four workmen were killed when a barn they were building the Yorkshire Dales collapsed on them, and three more were a father and two sons killed when their house collapsed.

19th September 2011

After discussions between Cleveland Railways Ltd and the Northumberland Witan, Cleveland Railway Ltd will take over the running of the railways in Northumberland, currently managed directly by the Witan. After of the expansion Cleveland Railways will be renamed Northumbrian Railways .

Northumberland will still run a locomotive building works and will maintain the tracks but Albion Railways Ltd will run the train schedules in the lines.

7th October 2011

After months of delays due to negotiation over costs, funding difficulties, war in Rutland, and September's bad weather, a ship-based mobile drilling platform arrived from Norway. Cleveland's new petroleum company will use the platform to dig exploratory wells in the North Sea. Construction of the rigs is expected to begin in dry docks on the Tees in mid-2012, and they would be floated out to site the following year to begin production.

The last military personnel that had been assisting with the Lincolnshire Infrastructure Project returned home in December, at which time they were debriefed by both the military leadership and the civilian government. Today the RCTA released a public report on the state of the city of Doncaster.

Although Doncaster lies south of Cleveland's claimed area of interest according to a declaration made earlier this year, the explorations related to the Lincolnshire Assimilation Project last summer have raised it to the attention of many in the kingdom. The city was found to be relatively intact, though abandoned for some time.

The leadership of the Church of Cleveland were appraised that Doncaster Cathedral had survived almost intact. Some windows had been broken but the majority of the structure was sound. It was decided that when the military sets up base in the city, a group of 25 engineers and artisans will travel to Doncaster with them to help salvage the Cathedral.

Radiation in the area was measured as light to moderate due to lingering contamination washing down from the Sheffield/Rotherham nuke hits.

The RCTA will set up a military barracks in the buildings around the old Corn Exchange, Wool Market and surrounding buildings. Their orders are to monitor the southwestern flank of the kingdom and to complete a more thorough exploration of the immediate surrounding area, taking radiation levels regularly to find areas of unhealthy radioactivity. 250 troops will be stationed in the city, they are due to arrive in Doncaster on the 1st May 2012.

If the area is found to be habitable, then it could be connected to the new Lincolnshire railways: a branch line from Scunthorpe, another from Doncaster to Wakefield and Dewsbury, and another to Barnsley.
