The Kingdom of the Algarve or the Algarves was a monarchy in the south-westernmost Iberian Peninsula. Originally a nominal kingdom within the Kingdom of Portugal, the crown was ceded by D. Sebastian III of Portugal to his brother Joseph over the Treaty of Silves which ended the War of Portuguese Succession. Joseph's branch was known as the Algarvian branch of the House of Aviz and/or pejoratively as the Holy branch.
