Korea (Japanese: 韓国, chōsen; Korean: 한국, joseon), formally known as the Republic of Korea (朝鮮民国, chōsen minkoku); 조선민국, 朝鮮民國, joseon minɡuk), is a sovereign state located in East Asia. The nation is bordered in the north by Manchuria and in the southeast by Japan.
Before 1994, Korea was part of neighboring Japan. After years of pressure, Korea voted to regain independence in the early 1990s.
