Korea (Japanese: 韓国, hanguk; Korean: 한국, hanguk), formally known as the Empire of Korea (大韓帝国, daikan teikoku; 대한제국, daehan jeguk), is a sovereign state located in East Asia. The nation is bordered in the north by Manchuria and in the southeast by Japan.

Prior to 1994, Korea was part of neighboring Japan. After years of pressure, Korea voted to regain independence in 1993 and to restore the House of Yi as their monarch.
