Kurdistan (Kurdish: کوردستان), formally the Kurdish Democratic Republic (Kurdish: کۆماری دیموکراتی کوردستان Komara Demokratîk a Kurdistanê), is a nation in Western Asia, stretching along in a territory to the east of Lake Urmia. The country Kurdistan is located in the northeastern part of Greater Kurdistan cultural region which forms parts of Turkey, Iraq, Iran and the Asian portion of the United Arab Republic. Kurdistan borders the Soviet Union (through the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic) to the north, Iran to the east, Iraq to the southwest and Turkey to the northwest. Kurdistan is a member of Comecon and an observer member of Warsaw Pact.
