The Republic of Lakotah or Lakotah is a survivor country in North America founded by Lakota nationalists shortly after Doomsday. Its controls most of western North Dakota and South Dakota. It was a long time nemesis of the North American Union, but became a member in 2004.

History[]

Pre-Doomsday[]

The area that would one day become the Republic included some of the poorest counties in the United States. Many of the founding members of the Republic were active members of the American Indian Movement, including Russell Means who would become the main proponent of the Republic following Doomsday.

Post-Doomsday[]

North and South Dakota were not spared from Doomsday. Minot AFB, Cavalier AFS, Grand Forks AFB and Ellsworth AFB were hit by airburst nuclear explosions. There were further strikes against the missile silos west and south of Minot, North Dakota. Due to their rural nature and isolation from military targets, the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Rosebud Indian Reservation, the Lower Brule Indian Reservation and the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, all managed to weather the early months of Doomsday rather well.

Lakotah Nationalism[]

More to come...

Government[]

Lakotah is a confederation based on libertarian principles. Most of the power is concentrated among the leaders of Lakota tribes that control the state, but recent reforms have extended representation to non-Lakota regions in the Republic. In many ways each individual community is a mini-state united together to form the Republic of Lakotah. Since 2004, all adults are considered citizens of the nation.

There is no nation-wide tax, but local communities institute their own tax

A "Grand Jury" acts as its judicial wing, which investigates and punishes crimes in Lakotah territory.

International relations[]

Lakotah is a member of the North American Union. It has had a long-standing border dispute with Assiniboia that has led to several brushfire wars throughout the 1990s and early 21st century.

Demographics[]

Though it serves as a homeland to the Lakota people, there is a substantial minority of non-Lakota who live in the borders. Many of the old tribes have reclaimed their old territories, some even returning to a nomadic lifestyle. Non-Lakota towns have autonomy within the republic as long as they pay a yearly tribute to the Tribal Council.

The Mandan, Arikara, and Hidatsa peoples are considered full citizens of the Republic despite not being ethnically Lakota.

Lakotah education focuses on teaching traditional Lakota language, art, dance, music, science and oral tradition. Even non-Lakota schools were required to focus on these subjects until 2004.

Economy[]

Lakotah has made extensive use of solar and wind power to supply their energy needs. Research has also been commenced on using sugar beets as bio-fuel, though the project is now under the supervision of the North American Union.

Since joining the North American Union, the Republic has received aid in the form of Union paid construction workers who are working to improve the nation's infrastructure.
