Liège (Walloon: Lîdje) is the easternmost state of Belgium: it borders Germany to its east, Luxembourg to its south, Namur to its southwest, Walloon Brabant to its west, and to its Netherlands to its north. Like much of the rest of Belgium, it is a flat region with several rivers, the most important of which is the Meuse.
Once a medieval county and duchy, Liège has historically been one of the main industrial centres of Belgium: it has large amounts of coal mines and steel factories. Its capital, Liège, is the third largest city in the country. The state was also the site of many important battles during the Great War, also because of its strategic importance.
