Since its creation in 1867, the sovereignty of Austria-Hungary (now Danubia) has been represented by monarchs of the Habsburg dynasty.
Members of the House of Habsburg had been the elected Holy Roman Emperors since 1438 (except for a five-year break from 1740 to 1745) and mostly resided in Vienna. Thus the term "Austrian emperor" may occur in texts dealing with the time before 1803, when no Austrian Empire existed. In these cases the word Austria means the composite monarchy ruled by the dynasty, not the country. A special case was Maria Theresa; she bore the imperial title as the consort of Francis I (r. 1745–1765), but she herself was the monarch of the Austrian Hereditary Lands including Bohemia and Hungary.
The Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 (called the Ausgleich in German and the Kiegyezés in Hungarian), which inaugurated the empire's dual structure in place of the former Austrian Empire (1803–1867), originated at a time when Austria had declined in strength and in power - both among the states of the Italian Confederation (as a result of the Second Italian War of Independence of 1859) and the German Confederation (it had been surpassed by Prussia as the dominant German-speaking power following the Austro-Prussian War of 1866). The Compromise re-established the full sovereignty of the Kingdom of Hungary, which was lost after the Hungarian Revolution of 1848.
The full title of the monarchs is, since 1943, His Imperial and Royal Majesty, King of Cisleithania, King of Transleithania, King of Slavonia, King of Austria and Apostolic King of Hungary, King of the Sudets, King of the Czechs, King of Croatia, Duke of Slovenia, Duke of Slovakia, King of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Sovereign of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
