The idea of a single Lankan state has endured as an ideology but has never been practiced.Ever since the end of the time of the ancient king Ravana,the Lankans have always had just a patchwork of states ruled by warlords,kings,and eventually,colonial viceroys.Kandy was the last state to survive,and it eventually unified Lanka after the British left India in 1858.
