The Duchy of Habsburg was created in 1489 following the Lenzburg-Premyslid War, with Leopold I created as its first duke. Prior to this the titular House of Habsburg had been ruling Counts of Habsburg until 1424, when the title became honorary and congruent with the title Prince of Germany.
Dukes of Habsburg[]
In 1489 the Duchy of Habsburg was created by Henry VIII, Holy Roman Emperor in the aftermath of the Lenzburg-Premyslid War, from territory formerly held by the Swiss Confederacy. Leopold von Habsburg, whose son Peter was married to Henry VIII’s daughter Maria Přemysl, was selected as the first duke from the House of Habsburg.
