Alternative History

The leader of the Italian League is known as the consul, an elected position. Over the course of the nation's history the position has changed forms numerous times, and has had its powers amended in the constitution.

Beginning in 1651 the nation had a sole consul. The first change to the consul system came in 1672 with the introduction of four year term limits, replacing the previous life terms. During this time the consul was elected by an electoral college consisting of representatives from each city in the league, a system modeled partially on the elections in the neighboring Holy Roman Empire, and on the systems of government of various merchant republics, such as Venice, one of the League's member cities.

After the Interregnum of 1728 the consuls were elected on a more or less democratic process, although the vote was severally limited. In 1734 the Triumvirate System was introduced, which created three consuls, which in theory were to be all vested equal executive power, however, in practice the First Consul often reigned supreme over the other two. The Constitution of the Year XVIII guaranteed that popular First Consul Carlo Bonaparte would essentially reign for life as compensation for his service to the League, although would later choose to be reaffirmed through referendum. In 1761 he formally stepped down, granting all power back to the Senate and the upcoming elections.
