Victorinus II was forced to abdicate the throne in 1950 due to his ties to the Byzantine colonial government. Due to him having no children, the title of monarch passed to his wife, Fatimah el-Sharif, who was subsequently crowned Iulia of Cyrenaica. Since independence, the monarchy has attempted to distance itself from its Byzantine past and serve more as a symbol of the independence Cyrenaica. This would culminate in Idris being crowned King of Cyrenaica in 2009 and retaining his Berber name rather than adapting a Byzantine-Greek name as was tradition among Cyrenaican monarchs up to that point.
