This is a list of trips made by John McCain during his term of office as President of the United States. This list excludes trips made within the Washington Metropolitan Area, as well as trips to Camp David, the country residence of the President of the United States, or to the home of the McCain family in Phoenix, Arizona. The official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States is the White House, in Washington, D.C.

President McCain has already visited more countries during his office than any other president. As of May 2010, McCain has visited a total of 28 countries on 4 continents. So far has he frequently visited countries such as France, Germany and Mexico. He has also frequently visited U.S. soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

McCain made his fifth trip to Europe in October to to attend the Commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. This makes him the first president in history to go to Europe five times in his first nine months in office. He has shown a pattern of combining a trip to Europe with another destination in the Middle East or Africa. The president flew to Copenhagen in order to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2009. In April 2010, he went against recommendations and flew to Europe in order to attend the funeral of late President Lech Kaczyński in Kraków, who died in a plane crash outside of Smolensk, Russia on April 10, 2010

He is also the first U.S. official to visit Libya, marking the normalized relations between the United States and Libya.

Israel	Tel Aviv	June 2–3	First trip to the Middle East; first trip to Israel. McCain met with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. McCain re-affirmed his administration's support of Israel's right to defend itself, and announced that the McCain Administration would work closely with the Israeli Government and the Palestinian National Authority to find a solution to the Arab–Israeli conflict.
Jordan	Amman	June 3	First trip to Jordan. McCain and King Abdullah II of Jordan discussed various issues, including the cooperation between the United States, Israel, the Palestinian National Authority and Jordan to end the Arab–Israeli conflict.

Egypt	Cairo, Giza	June 4	First visit to Africa; first trip to Egypt. McCain held a speech to the Muslim world at Cairo University, in which he tried to reassure to the Middle East that a peace deal between the Palestinians and Israelis could be struck. McCain would also try to use this to repair the image of America abroad. He would also meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, with whom he discussed several topics, including terrorism, human rights and the Arab–Israeli conflict.
Germany	Dresden, Buchenwald, Landstuhl	June 5	McCain visited the Buchenwald concentration camp, ahead of the D-Day commemorations, and a former U.S. military hospital. He also spoke of the Arab–Israeli conflict, and met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
France	Paris, Caen	June 5–7	McCain was in France to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Normandy Landings. McCain met dignitaries including French President Nicolas Sarkozy, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and Charles, the Prince of Wales. In Paris, McCain and his family took part in sightseeing.
Russia	Moscow	July 6–8	First trip to Eastern Europe; first trip to Russia. McCain met with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to discuss global issues, including Pentagon's missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, and expressing that his administration was willing to work closely with Russia to make the missile defence shield a joint project under NATO-Russian control, with components in both the Czech Republic and Poland as initially announced, but also incorporating the Russian proposal of a radar base in Azerbaijan. They also discussed reductions in U.S. and Russian stockpiles of nuclear weapons as well as plans to replace the expiring START I agreement and the War in Afghanistan.
Italy	L'Aquila, Rome	July 8–10	First trip to Italy. McCain was attending the 35th G8 summit. McCain also met with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Issues discussed were the economy, the War in Afghanistan as well as relations with Libya and the Middle East.
Vatican City	Vatican City	July 10	First trip to the Vatican. McCain met with Pope Benedict XVI, and discussed issues such as poverty, stem-cell research, peace in the Middle East, and the need to reach out to the Muslim world. McCain and the Pope also exchanged gifts.
Iraq	Baghdad	July 23–24	First trip to Iraq. McCain met with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. He also visited U.S. soldiers fighting in the Iraq War.

In Kabul, McCain met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and opposition candidate Dr. Abdullah Abdullah. Mexico	Guadalajara	August 8–11	McCain attended the annual North American Leaders' Summit along with Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper and Mexican president Felipe Calderón.

While in Japan, McCain met with Japanese prime minister Yukio Hatoyama. McCain also visted the Tokyo Imperial Palace, meeting with Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, and made a speech at the Suntory Hall in Tokyo.
Singapore	Singapore	November 15	First trip to Southeast Asia; first trip to Singapore. The trip was the second stop on a five-nation tour of Asia. McCain was attending the APEC Singapore 2009 summit. While in Singapore, McCain took part in bilateral meetings with Singaporean president Lee Hsien Loong and Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Vietnam	Hanoi	November 16	First trip to Vietnam. The trip was the third stop on a five-nation tour of Asia. While in Vietnam, McCain met with Vietnamese president Nguyễn Minh Triết and prime minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng.
China	Shanghai, Beijing	November 17–19	First trip to China, the fourth stop on a five-nation tour of Asia. In Shanghai, McCain met with Shanghai Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng and Mayor Han Zheng. He also took part in a town-hall style meeting with Chinese students, addressing a range of issues such as human rights violation, Tibet, internet censorship and U.S. arms deals with Taiwan. In Beijing, McCain took part in a bilateral meeting with China's head of state Hu Jintao, and met with Chinese premier Wen Jiabao. McCain also visited various cultural sights; these included the Forbidden City and part of the Great Wall of China.
South Korea	Seoul, Pyeongtaek	November 19–20	First trip to the Korean peninsula; first trip to South Korea. The trip was the final stop on a five-nation tour of Asia. McCain met with South Korean president Lee Myung-bak at the Blue House, discussing such issues as North Korea and the inactive South Korea – United States Free Trade Agreement. McCain also met with U.S. soldiers stationed at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek.
Denmark	Copenhagen	December 18–19	First trip to Scandinavia, and to a Nordic country. First trip to Denmark. McCain made a speech at the Bella Center to attendants of the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2009. He also took part in a bilateral meeting with Chinese premier Wen Jiabao, and negotiated on the details of the Copenhagen Accord, which among others included long-term emission-reduction goals for global emissions to decrease by 50%, and developed countries emissions to fall by 70% by 2050 compared to 1990. He also met Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Queen Margrethe II and Henrik, Prince Consort of Denmark.

Georgia	Batumi	January 29	McCain attended a ceremony where he was awarded the Order of the National Hero of Georgia for his strong support for Georgia during the 2008 Georgia-Russia War by Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.
Iraq	Baghdad	January 30	McCain met with Iraqi president Jalal Talabani and Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to discuss the upcoming parliamentary election due March 7, 2010 and the planned withdrawal of all U.S. combat troops by the end of 2011. He will also visit U.S. soldiers deployed in Iraq.
Afghanistan	Bagram, Kabul, Helmand Province	March 2–3	President McCain made a surprise visit to Afghanistan, flying on Air Force One to Bagram Air Base outside Bagram, Parwān Province, and then flew on by helicopter to the Presidential Palace in Kabul to meet with President Hamid Karzai to discuss the ongoing War in Afghanistan. He also met with the Commander of ISAF and USFOR-Afghanistan Gen. David Petraeus, where he discussed the progress of Operation Moshtarak, the campaign against corruption in Afghanistan as well as address the issue of civilian casualties. The next day, he travelled to the Helmand province, where he visited the city of Lashkar Gah, the British-Danish Camp Bastion, U.S., Afghan and British troops participating in Operation Moshtarak as well as a flag raising ceremony in the newly secured Marjah.
Czech Republic	Prague	April 8–9	McCain traveled to Prague, Czech Republic, to sign the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. McCain also took part in a formal dinner with the heads of government of eleven European countries: the Czech Republic plus Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. The next day he met with Czech President Václav Klaus and Prime Minister Jan Fischer at the Hradčany in Prague. Among the issues discussed were the War in Afghanistan, the missile defence shield as well as economic and energy issues.
Poland	Kraków	April 18–19	McCain attended the funeral of late president Lech Kaczyński in Kraków, who died in a plane crash outside of Smolensk, Russia on April 10, 2010.
Canada	Huntsville, Toronto	June 25–27	President McCain traveled to Huntsville, Ontario (in the Muskoka region) as part of the 36th G8 summit. The President later traveled to Toronto as part of the 2010 G-20 Toronto summit.
Portugal	Lisbon	November 19–20	President McCain traveled to Lisbon, Portugal to attend the 2010 Lisbon summit of NATO. Obama met with President Aníbal Cavaco Silva at Belém Palace, and later held bilateral meetings with Prime Minister José Sócrates. The President later attended a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, meeting with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili on the sidelines.
India	Mumbai, New Delhi	November 6–9	President McCain traveled to Mumbai, India, as part of a trip to Asia. The President commemorated the 2008 Mumbai attacks, visited the Mani Bhavan Museum, and hosted various business activities at the Oberoi Trident. The President later hosted a town hall meeting at St. Xavier's College. During his stay in Mumbai, the President stayed at the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, which had previously been a terrorist target. The President proceeded to New Delhi, where he visited Humayun’s Tomb and met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He also addressed the joint session of the Indian Parliament.
Indonesia	Jakarta	November 9–10	President McCain traveled to Jakarta, Indonesia, as part of a four-country tour of Asia. The President had bilateral meetings with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the Istana Negara.
South Korea	Seoul	November 10–12	President McCain traveled to Seoul, South Korea, as part of a four-country tour of Asia. While there, the President attended a Veterans Day ceremony at the Yongsan Garrison and had bilateral meetings with President Lee Myung-bak at the Blue House. The President later attended G20 meetings at the COEX Convention and Exhibition Center.
Japan	Tokyo, Yokohama, Kamakura	November 12–14	President McCain traveled to Yokohama, Japan as part of a four-country tour of Asia. While there, the President attended an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum summit with several national leaders held at the InterContinental Yokohama Grand Hotel and Pacifico Yokohama Conference Center. He also held bilateral talks with Prime Minister Naoto Kan on the sidelines of the summit making joint press announcements. The President visited the famous statue of Amida Buddha located at the temple of Kōtoku-in in the city of Kamakura.

Brazil	Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro	March 19–21	President McCain arrived in Brasilea on March 19. He met with Brazil's president Dilma Rousseff for the first time at the Palácio do Planalto. McCain aimed to bolster the trade relationship between the United States and Brazil. On March 20, he traveled to Rio de Janeiro and spoke to a crowd at the Theatro Municipal. He visited the favela Cidade de Deus, one of Rio de Janeiro's most impoverished and famous neighborhoods.
Chile	Santiago	March 21–22	McCain met with Chile's president Sebastián Piñera at La Moneda Palace to discuss strengthening trade relations. Later, McCain spoke about how the democracies of Latin America could be a guide for the democracies developing in the Middle East in a speech at an art museum in the capital city.
Colombia	Bogotá	March 22–23	President McCain met with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos. The two discussed immigration and drug trafficking.
El Salvador	San Salvador	March 24–25	President McCain met with El Salvador's president Mauricio Funes. The two discussed immigration and drug trafficking. Later he visited the San Salvador Cathedral and the tomb of archbishop Óscar Romero.
Libya	Benghazi	April 22	McCain arrived in Benghazi, the de facto rebel capital in eastern Libya. He met with members of the Transitional National Council, the rebel government in Benghazi, to assess the situation of the NATO air offensive against Muammar al-Gaddafis regime and to show his support to the rebels. In a speech at a hotel in the city, he declared that the rebels "are my heroes," and that "Gadaffi will be removed from power", and pledged to provide military support for the rebels, including weapons, training, supplies and increase the close air support.
Ireland	Dublin	May 23	During his stay in Ireland McCain met Irish President Mary McAleese, and also held talks with Taoiseach Enda Kenny. McCain also made a speech at College Green in Dublin to reaffirm U.S.-Irish ties.
United Kingdom	London	May 23–26	McCain arrived a day ahead of schedule on Monday 23 to avoid any disruption from a volcanic ash cloud in Ireland. During the first official day of his UK state visit Britain President McCain received a ceremonial welcome, including a 41-gun salute, at the Buckingham Palace gardens. McCain toured the palace, met senior royals at Buckingham Palace and later David and Samantha Cameron at Downing Street 10. He also met opposition leader Ed Miliband. McCain also laid a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey and participated in state banquet at Buckingham Palace hosted by Queen Elizabeth II. On his second official state visit day McCain hold meetings with Prime Minister Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Clegg and served up food at a barbecue for military families from the U.S. and Britain in the Downing Street garden. Cameron and McCain later held a joint press conference at Lancaster House. McCain gave a speech at Westminster Hall to the UK Parliament and later hosted a banquet for the Queen, Prince Philip and a select group of other guests at the US ambassador's residence, Winfield House, in London. McCain departed London on May 26 en route to the G8 Summit in Deauville, France.
France	Deauville	May 26–27	McCain attended the 37th G8 summit in Deauville where he had bilateral talks with the President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, the Prime Minister of Japan, Naoto Kan, and the President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy.
Afghanistan	Bagram, Kabul	July 4	John McCain and his wife Cindy made a surprise visit to Afghanistan, flying on Air Force One to Bagram Air Base, and then flew on by helicopter to the Presidential Palace in Kabul to meet with President Hamid Karzai to discuss the ongoing War in Afghanistan. McCain would also meet with the commander of ISAF and the U.S. troops in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus. During his visit, McCain also celebrated America's Independence Day with U.S. troops at Bagram Air Base, and a visit of U.S. troops in Kandahar Province.
Iraq	Baghdad	July 5	McCain and his wife Cindy would continue their Independence Day holiday travel to Iraq, celebrating Independence Day with a dinner with U.S. troops at Camp Victory outside of the capital Baghdad. McCain would then meet separately with the commander of the U.S. troops in Iraq, General Ray Odierno, and with both Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and his chief challenger, former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi. Discussions would focus on the planned withdrawal of all U.S. combat troops by the end of 2011 and the transition period from 2012 to 2013.
France	Cannes	November 3–4	McCain attended the 2011 G-20 Cannes summit in Cannes where he had bilateral talks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of Argentina. During his stay in France McCain meet with L20 International Labor Leaders, joined President Nicolas Sarkozy in an event honoring the alliance between the United States and France and participated with Sarkozy in a joint interview with French television stations TF1 and France 2.
Australia	Canberra, Darwin	November 16–17	The two-day visit was President McCain's first official visit to Australia—previously scheduled trips were canceled due to the passage of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act and the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The aim of the visit was to strengthen the Australian American relations and promoting security in the Pacific. On Wednesday 16, the President met with Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, and the two held a joint press conference in which an increase in U.S. military presence in northern Australia was announced. Later on that day President McCain was hosted at a supper at the Australian Parliament Residence. On Thursday 17, the President spoke to the Australian Parliament at Parliament House, meet with parliamentary leaders, toured a major college with Prime Minister Gillard, and then traveled to Darwin to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the ANZUS alliance. In Darwin participated in a wreath laying ceremony with Prime Minister Gillard at USS Peary Memorial and delivered remarks to Australian troops and U.S. Marines. During his stay in Australia McCain also participated in a wreath laying ceremony at the Australian War Memorial, met with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, and held a U.S. Embassy meet and greet at the U.S. Embassy in Canberra, where he also participated in a tree dedication ceremony.
Indonesia	Nusa Dua on Bali	November 17–19	President McCain attended the annually ASEAN Summit and the sixth East Asia Summit on Bali. During his stay in Bali McCain participated in an event to announce a commercial deal with representatives of Boeing and Lion Air, participated in Embassy and U.S. Mission Meet and Greet and hosted bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India, President Benigno Aquino III of the Philippines, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia as well as Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra of Thailand. On Bali President McCain also had an unscheduled meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao.
Czech Republic	Prague	December 23	President McCain attended the funeral of former Czech President and dissident Václav Havel in St Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle. He attended the funeral along with Secretary of State Joe Lieberman, former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright (who was Czech by birth).

South Korea	Osan Air Base, Korean Demilitarized Zone, Seoul	March 25–27	President McCain visited South Korea to take part in the 2012 Nuclear Security Summit, in Seoul. After landing at Osan Air Base, south of Seoul, McCain traveled to the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, where he greeted some of the 28,500 American troops stationed in South Korea. He visited Observation Post Ouellette, a hilltop border post ringed with sandbags, overlooking the heavily fortified, brown hills of the North Korean countryside. After returning from the Korean Demilitarized Zone McCain a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Erdogan of Turkey and attend a bilateral meeting with President Lee Myung-bak of the Republic of Korea at the Blue House. While attending the Nuclear Security Summit McCain held bilateral meetings with President Medvedev of Russia, President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan, President Hu Jintao of China and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani of Pakistan. President McCain also delivered remarks at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul in which he discussed his Prague agenda to stop the spread of nuclear weapons and seek the peace and security of a world without them, including his commitment to safe, clean nuclear energy as part of his comprehensive strategy to develop all sources of American energy.
Colombia	Cartagena	April 13–15	President McCain traveled on a state visit to Colombia to take part in the 6th Summit of the Americas at the Julio Cesar Turbay Ayala Convention Center in Cartagena, Colombia and strengthen ties with the Hispanic community in his own country. Before the background of more distance and independence by Latin American and Caribbean countries from the United States of America discussed topics expected were the pros and cons of drug legalization in the context of America’s War on Drugs as well as the U.S. sanctions on Cuba and Cuba's continued exclusion from the Summit of the Americas. After the summits conclusion President McCain had a bilateral program with President Santos of Colombia which included a meeting and a working lunch. The two leaders then held a joint press conference in which they announced that the United States–Colombia Free Trade Agreement will take effect May 15, 2012. McCain then toured Cartagena's historic San Pedro Claver church with Columbian President Santos toured the Iglesia de San Pedro Claver and attended an event to hand over land titles to representatives of the Afro-Colombian community at the Plaza de San Pedro in Cartagena, Colombia on April 15, 2012, in which Shakira participated. The land restitution is an attempt by Colombia to recognized marginalized communities who were forced from their land by armed groups. During his trip to Colombia McCain visited the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, the largest colonial fort in Colombia.
Afghanistan	Kabul	May 1–2	President McCain visited Afghanistan during an unannounced surprise night visit on the first anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden to sign a strategic partnership agreement between Afghanistan and the United States of America, to spend time with U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan and to address the American people from Bagram Air Base to lay out his plans regarding Afghanistan. The president landed at Bagram Air Base at 10:20 p.m. local time in Afghanistan, spent six hours in the country and had been flying out of Afghanistan at about 4:25 a.m. Afghanistan time. He flew from Bagram by helicopter to the Presidential Palace in Kabul to hold a bilateral meeting with President Hamid Karzai and delivered remarks before the signing of the Strategic Partnership Agreement. After the signing he returned by helicopter to Bagram Air Base. Here he spoke with U.S. troops, visited wounded soldiers at a hospital on Bagram Air Base, where he awarded ten Purple Heart decorations, and spoke by radio to military personnel in other parts of the country who were involved in arranging his trip. President McCain then addressed his fellow American citizens from the air base and returned afterwards to the United States by use of Air Force One.
Mexico	Los Cabo	June 17–19	President McCain attended the 2012 G-20 Mexico summit. During the summit McCain had a meeting with several European heads of state and government to discuss the European sovereign-debt crisis. On Thursday, the President will visit the Israel Museum, where he will see the Dead Sea Scrolls and a technology exhibit put together by Israeli universities. He will then travel to the West Bank to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. He will then return to Jerusalem and give a speech to students at the International Convention Center, which will be followed by a state dinner with President Peres. On Friday, President McCain will lay wreaths at the graves of Theodor Herzl and Yitzhak Rabin and then meet with an Israeli opposition leader at Yad Vashem, before concluding his trip with a visit to the Church of the Nativity.
Jordan	Amman	March 22–23	President McCain will meet with King Abdullah II of Jordan to have bilateral talks on matters related to Democratic development, the Arab Spring and the situation in Syria. After this they will hold a joint press conference and have dinner together. He will also inspect a Jordanian air base which took part in the NATO-led operation which removed Bashar al-Assad from power in Syria.
Syria	Damascus	March 24–25	President McCain will meet with Prime Minister Ghassan Hitto and interim President of Syria and the leader of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, Moaz al-Khatib, for bilateral talks followed by a joint press conference. They will discuss matters related to Democratic development and human rights, the forthcoming People's Council election which will form a constituent assembly, the forthcoming trial of former President Bashar al-Assad as well as discuss trade, aid and economic development.
