Introduction[]
The Second Mexican Empire was created by Napoleon III in 1863, during the Second French intervention in Mexico to establish a monarchist ally in Mexico. Napoleon III asked Maximilian of Austria, the brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria to become the Emperor of Mexico, an offer that Maximilian accepted after a vote was held in Mexico where the majority was positive. Before Maximilian's arrival Juan Almonte was the regent. With the help of France Maximilian's royalists defeated the republicans and secured Maximilian's position as Emperor. Maximilian was a member of the house of Habsburg-Lorraine which has ruled Mexico since.
