Lithuania, officially the Imperial Commonwealth of Lithuania, is a sovereign state in Eastern Europe, Northern Asia and North America. It is a federal parliamentary monarchy, which borders a total of 13 different countries. Its population of over 240 million people, gives it the fourth largest population in the world, while its territory of over 20 million square kilometers makes it the world's largest country by area. It is the only sovereign state in the world, whose territory stretches across three continents. Its capital and largest city is Vilnius.

For millennia the southeastern shores of the Baltic Sea were inhabited by various Baltic tribes. In the 1230s, Lithuanian lands were united by Mindaugas, founding the Kingdom of Lithuania on 6 July 1253. In the 14th century, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was the largest country in Europe. Following the death of the Lithuanian-born, elected Polish King Jogaila, the King of Lithuania and Ruthenia Vytautas I was elected the new King of Poland and added that kingdom to the Lithuanian domain. The Lithuanian domains were separated into three kingdoms - Lithuania, Poland and Ruthenia - until 1564, when King Mindaugas III unified them formally with the Commonwealth Act, which established the Imperial Commonwealth of Lithuania and raised his status to that of an emperor. Over the following centuries, the Commonwealth rapidly expanded into the east, all the way to the Pacific Ocean and North America. In 1804, Finland was conquered from Sweden. The Lithuanian monarchy's power shifted over time, but has always been constitutional, nevertheless major decision making has been the prerogative of the Seimas (parliament) since the early 19th century. Following the constitutional amednment of 1889, the hereditary seats in parliament, reserved to noblemen, were limited in number and the elective House of Representatives obtained the most de facto authority.

Lithuania is a federal parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy. The monarch belongs to the Gediminid Dynasty, which has ruled Lithuania since the early 14th century. The current monarch is Vytautas IX, who holds the titles of Emperor of Lithuania and King of Poland, Ruthenia and Finland. The Prime Minister is Gitanas Nauseda, who heads the democratically elected government.

Lithuania is classified as a global superpower. It has a highly developed and diverse economy with the third largest economy in the world.
