Lithuania (Lithuanian: Lietuva), officially the People's Republic of Lithuania (Lithuanian: Lietuvos Liaudies Respublika), is a country in Northeastern Europe, the largest of the three Baltic states. It is situated along the southeastern shore of the Baltic Sea, to the east of Scandinavia. It borders the Soviet Union to the north and to the east and Poland to the south. Lithuania has an estimated population of 2.6 million as of 2022, and its capital and largest city is Vilnius. Lithuania is a member of the United Nations, WTO, CSCE, the Comecon, and the Warsaw Pact and participates in cooperation with the European Community through the Helsinki Initiative.
