Louisiana

Louisiana is both the name of a US state and of the much larger territory originally covering most of the land between the Appalachians and the Rocky Mountains. Said territory once was owned by France, but divided between Britain and Spain after the Seven-Year War in 1763. During the time of Napoleon I, the western part with the city of New Orleans returned once more to France, before Thomas Jefferson bought it for 15 million US$ for the United States.
