The song was originally commissioned by Governor General Théodore Robitaille for the 1880 Saint-Jean-Baptiste-Day ceremony; Calixa Lavallée composed the music, after which, words were written by the poet and judge Adolphe-Basile Routhier. Louisiane had served as a de facto national anthem since the end of World War II in 1918, officially becoming Louisiana's anthem in 1980 when the Act of Parliament making it so was signed into law by the President, and became effective on 1 July as part of that year's Louisiana Day celebrations.
