Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, born Luiz Inácio da Silva and better known as just Lula (October 27, 1945), is a Brazilian politician, former unionist and former metal worker, affiliated with the Workers' Party (PT), of which is the main founder. He was the 25th Vice President of Brazil, having held the position from 2007 to 2015 in the term of President José Alencar.
Of poor origin, he migrated from Pernambuco to São Paulo as a child with his family. He was a metallurgist and a unionist, at which time he received the nickname "Lula", a hypocoristic form of "Luís". During the military dictatorship, he led major workers' strikes in ABC Paulista and helped found the Workers' Party in 1980 during the process of political opening. Lula was one of the main leaders of ''Diretas Já'', during the period of redemocratization, when he started his political career. In 1986 he was elected federal deputy for the state of São Paulo with record voting.
In 1989 he ran for the presidency of the Republic for the first time, losing in the first round to. He also ran for president three other times, in 1994, 1998 and 2002 losing both elections to Itamar Franco (in 1994) and Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1998 and 2002). With Alencar's support, he was chosen to be Alencar's vice-candidate in the 2006 elections, where he won the same election along with Alencar, becoming vice president of Brazil on March 15, 2007. He was re-elected along with president alencar, where defeated the toucan Aécio Neves and João Doria.
He was a pre-candidate for the 2014 elections, where he won the primaries of his party with 86% of the votes obtained in the election, his health ended up suffering an attack against him and ended up being seriously hospitalized, with that in May 2014, he ended up giving up in your campaign. He chose his vice-candidate Haddad as his party candidate for the 2014 elections against toucan Aécio Neves.
Due to his health, which was still in trouble, Lula ended up canceling his possible candidacy for president in 2018. In 2022, he made his candidacy for president official, and won the party's primaries.
